Transportation - Bus Aide
Purpose Statement
The job of Transportation - Bus Aide is done for the purpose/s of providing support within the student transportation services area,with specific responsibilities for assisting all passengers, including special education students. during transport to and from school and/or special activities; and ensuring the safety and sanitation of assigned vehicles.
This Job reports to Assigned Supervisor
Essential Functions
- Assists special education students and other passengers (e.g. assisting special physical and medical needs passengers; supporting positive behavior of all passengers, etc.) for the purpose of providing safe loading, unloading, acceptable behavior, emergency provision, during normal transport and emergency transport situations.
- Attends unit meetings, in-service training, workshops, etc. (e.g. substitute bus driving, schedule changes, mobility aids, etc.) for the purpose of gathering information required to perform assigned job functions.
- Collaborates with bus driver (e.g. communicating student health and student behavior issues, and student pick-up schedules; implementing student behavior strategies; adapting to weather-related challenges, etc.) for the purpose of ensuring a secure and supportive environment on bus.
- Communicates with passengers (e.g. explaining acceptable bus passenger behavior, relating changes in time schedules, providing information for field trips, reassuring special needs passengers, etc.) for the purpose of enforcing rules/regulations and maintaining student safety and well-being.
- Ensures parent participation (e.g. as needed, for students who require a parent to be at pick-up and dropoff location, etc.) for the purpose of meeting all regulations, laws, regarding student safety.
- Fosters development of supportive and inclusive atmosphere (e.g. daily bus trip environment, etc.) for the purpose of providing safety and acceptable passenger behavior.
- Monitors students with special needs until released to teacher, instructional assistant, parent, etc. (e.g. special medical conditions, etc.) for the purpose of ensuring the safe transportation of all passengers.
- Prepares reports (e.g. incident reports, passenger misconduct, etc.) for the purpose of documenting activities, providing written reference, conveying information, and complying with established guidelines.
- Reports student behavior and/or incidents (e.g. discipline, accidents, inappropriate social behavior, health emergencies, etc.) for the purpose of communicating information to appropriate personnel for resolution.
- Secures students and/or their equipment (e.g. restraints, wheelchair tie downs, seat belts, etc.) for the purpose of ensuring the safety and well-being of students.
Other Functions
Performs other related duties as assigned for the purpose of ensuring the efficient and effective functioning of daily student bus transportation.
Job Requirements: Minimum Qualifications
Skills, Knowledge and Abilities
SKILLS are required to perform single, technical tasks with a potential need to upgrade skills in order to meet changing job conditions. Specific skill based competencies required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include: adhering to safety practices; preparing and maintaining accurate records; operating equipment used in transporting special needs students; administering first aid and/or prescribed medications; inspecting vehicles; communicating effectively with students, parents, staff.
KNOWLEDGE is required to perform basic math; read a variety of manuals, write documents following prescribed formats, and/or present information to others; and solve practical problems. Specific knowledge based
competencies required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include: safety practices and procedures; age appropriate activities/behaviors; codes/laws/rules/regulations/policies; methods of instruction and training; school safety and security practices; emergency first aid.
ABILITY is required to schedule activities; gather and/or collate data; and consider a number of factors when using equipment. Flexibility is required to work with others in a wide variety of circumstances; work with data utilizing defined but different processes; and operate equipment using a variety of processes. Ability is also required to work with a significant diversity of individuals and/or groups; work with similar types of data; and utilize a variety of jobrelated equipment. Specific ability based competencies required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include: communicating with diverse groups; maintaining confidentiality; working as part of a team; lifting, pushing, pulling, working over time; meeting deadlines and schedules; providing problem solving for environmental, student physical emergencies, student behavior situations; meeting deadlines and schedules.

Responsibilities include: working under limited supervision following standardized practices and/or methods; leading, guiding, and/or coordinating others; operating within a defined budget. Work Environment
The usual and customary methods of performing the job's functions require the following physical demands:
significant lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling, frequent climbing and balancing, frequent stooping, kneeling, crouching, and/or crawling and significant fine finger dexterity. Generally the job requires 20% sitting, 40% walking, 40% standing. The job is performed under minimal temperature variations and under conditions with exposure to risk of injury and/or illness.
Experience: Job related experience is desired.
Education: High school diploma or equivalent.
