PRINCIPAL, ELEMENTARY

 

QUALIFICATIONS:

  1. Valid Missouri Administrative certification appropriate for specific level.
  2. Degree(s) required and area of major study.
  3. Experience needed for specific assignment.

REPORTS TO:                                                  Assistant to the Superintendent, K-8 Education

 

JOB GOAL:                                                      To use leadership, supervisory, and administrative skills to promote the educational development of each student.

 

 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  1. Establishes and maintains an effective learning climate in the school.
  2. Initiates, designs, and implements programs to meet specific needs of the school.
  3. Keeps the superintendent informed of the school's activities and problems.
  4. Makes recommendations concerning the school's administration and instruction.
  5. Assists in the management and preparation of the school budget.
  6. Supervises the maintenance of all required building records and reports.
  7. Prepares or supervises the preparation of reports, records, lists, and all other paperwork required or appropriate to the school's administration.
  8. Works with various members of the central administrative staff on school problems of more than in-school import, such as transportation and special services.
  9. Keeps supervisor informed of events and activities of an unusual nature as well as routine matters related to the supervisor's accountability.
  10. Assumes responsibility for the implementation and observance of all Board policies and regulations by the school's staff and students.
  11. Maintains active relationships with students and parents.
  12. Budgets school time to provide for the efficient conduct of school instruction and business.
  13. Leads in the development, determination of appropriateness, and monitoring of the instructional program.
  14. Schedules classes within established guidelines to meet student needs.
  15. Assists in the development, revision, and evaluation of the building level implementation of the district curriculum.
  16. Supervises the guidance program to enhance individual student education and development.
  17. Maintains high standards of student conduct and enforces discipline as necessary, according to due process rights of students.
  18. Attends special events held to recognize student achievement, and attends school-sponsored activities, functions, and athletic events.
  19. Maintains and controls the various local funds generated by student activities.
  20. Supervises the maintenance of accurate records on the progress and attendance of students.
  21. Assumes responsibility for the attendance, conduct, and maintenance of health of students.
  22. Assumes responsibility of his or her own professional growth and development through membership and participation in the affairs of professional organizations; attendance at regional, state, and national meetings; and enrollment in advanced courses.
  23. Supervises all professional, paraprofessional, administrative, and support personnel attached to the school.
  24. Assists in the recruiting, screening, hiring, training, assigning, and evaluating of the school's professional staff.
  25. Supervises the school's teaching process.
  26. Approves the master teaching schedule and any special assignments.
  27. Orients newly assigned staff members and assists in their development, as appropriate.
  28. Plans for and assists in the evaluation of all staff members regarding their individual and group performance.
  29. Conducts meetings of the staff as necessary for the proper functioning of the school.
  30. Assists in the in-service orientation and training of teachers, with special responsibility for staff administrative procedures and instructions.
  31. Recommends, according to established procedures, the removal of a teacher whose work is unsatisfactory.
  32. Makes arrangements for special conferences between parents and teachers.
  33. Assumes responsibility for the safety and administration of the school plant.
  34. Supervises the daily use of the school facilities for both academic and nonacademic purposes.
  35. Plans and supervises fire drills, tornado drills, and an emergency preparedness program.
  36. Asserts leadership in times of civil disobedience in school in accordance with established Board policy.
  37. Provides for adequate inventories of school property and for the security and accountability for that property.
  38. Plans for the supervision of all activities and programs that are outgrowths of the school's curriculum.
  39. Plans for and assists in the supervision and evaluation of the school's extracurricular program.
  40. Participates in principals' meetings, negotiations meetings, and such other meetings as are required or appropriate.
  41. Serves as an ex officio member of all committees and councils within the school.
  42. Cooperates with college and university officials regarding teacher training and preparation.
  43. Responds to written and oral requests for information.
  44. Assumes responsibility for all official school correspondence and news releases.
  45. Establishes and maintains with local community groups and individuals to foster understanding and solicit support for overall school objectives and programs; to interpret Board policies and administrative directives; and to discuss and resolve individual student problems.
  46. Serves as a member of such committees and attends such meetings as directed by the superintendent.
  47. Delegates authority to responsible personnel to assume responsibility for the school in the absence of the principal.
  48. Demonstrates effective human relations and communication skills.
  49. Leads in the development of the school’s mission and goals and programs/projects to achieve them.
  50. Works with site-based shared decision team to accomplish building goals.
  51. Leads in the development of the building’s instructional focus; provides in-service training to assist staff in carrying out that focus.
  52. Complies with good safety practices.
  53. Complies with all district rules, regulations, and policies.
  54. Other duties/responsibilities deemed necessary may be assigned.

 

 

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:                                                    The individual who holds this position is regularly required to walk, hear and speak and must have close moderate and distance vision ability. This individual must be able to travel between district facilities. The position requires a moderate amount of travel.

 

 

CONDITIONS AND ENVIRONMENT:                         The work environment is consistent with typical office/school environment.

EVALUATION:                                                                    Performance of this job will be evaluated in accordance with provisions of the Board’s policy on evaluations utilizing the Performance Based Administrator Evaluation process.
