MEDICINE AND HEALTHCARE

 

PROGRAM OVERVIEW:

The Northland Center for Advanced Professional Studies (NCAPS) is an innovative, unique program that is designed to provide junior and senior students hands-on, real world experience in a profession of Medicine and Healthcare.  Students take rigorous college-level courses within and are able to explore their interests in a profession-based learning approach.  At Northland CAPS, students fast forward into their future as if they already have a college degree and are fully immersed in a professional culture, solving real world problems, using industry standard tools and are mentored by real employers, which leads to substantial advanced contribution during the formative high school years.  Northland CAPS students learn from global and local leaders, such as BankLiberty, Cerner, Ford Motor Company, Holland 1916, Liberty Hospital, North Kansas City Hospital, who have chosen to partner with Northland CAPS and share the program's commitment to educate the future leaders of America.

 

 

COURSE DESCRIPTION:

Medicine and Healthcare careers range from technicians in respiratory therapy to physicians in private practice and from biomedical engineers to admitting personnel.  Understanding the breadth of available career options is crucial to making the right education decisions.

 

Students who choose the Medicine and Healthcare Strand of the NCAPS program will be able to see and experience many areas of healthcare service.  Job shadows and hands-on experience will follow classroom instruction.

 

The following is a structural outline for the Medicine and Healthcare Strand:

  • The Medicine and Healthcare Strand will accommodate up to 25 students in the a.m. session and 25 in the p.m. session. These students will be from any participating school district.
  • NCAPS instructors oversee the program. Business partner projects, job shadowing and hands-on experience will be initially completed at North Kansas City Hospital, Liberty Hospital and other healthcare business partners.
  • NCAPS courses offer high school and college credit. Metropolitan Community College is the college credit partner.
  • Medicine and Healthcare instructor partners with business partners to coordinate access to specific departments for Medicine and Healthcare Strand internships, independent study and/or other study options for the spring semester of the school year.

 

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Science, Biology, or other Health related certificate or field experience
  • Demonstrates effective human relations and communication skills.
  • Effective classroom management strategies.
  • Superior project management skills.
  • Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the Board may find appropriate or acceptable.

 

UNIQUE REQUIRMENTS OF THE POSTION INCLUDE:

  • Willing to design, develop and maintain a state-of-art curriculum using the direct input and guidance from business partners and mentors.
  • Willing to facilitate the delivery of the course, while being co-located within a business partner facility.
  • Willing to develop and maintain multiple business partners, mentors, guest speakers, site visits, resulting in the acquisition of real world projects for students to work on.
  • Medicine and healthcare experience is desirable for this position. 
  • Willing to supervise student interns and collaborate with associated internship supervisors.
  • Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the Board.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:                                             

The individual who holds this position is regularly required to walk, hear and speak and must have close moderate and distance vision ability. This individual must be able to travel between district facilities. The position requires a moderate amount of travel and physical activity.

 

CONDITIONS AND ENVIRONMENT:                        

The work environment is consistent with typical office/school environment.                                                                    

 

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT:                                          

Salary and work calendar to be established by the Board.  Benefits according to Board policies.

Valid Missouri Teaching Certificate

EVALUATION:                                                                   

Performance of this job will be evaluated in accordance with provisions of the Board’s policy on evaluations utilizing the Performance Based Teacher Evaluation process.
